Sourav Ganguly holds a very important position in the history of Indian cricket. He had been hated and loved equally by his team members once upon a time. The period he maintained his team and the games through his captaincy had been remembered proudly by the game lovers. He is mainly considered to put a name to his captaincy tenure for giving a shape to a young team. His run-in with Greg chapel and a rich partnership with Sachin in the ODIs etc made him the most remembered and respected team captain.
He took the crown of captaincy at the most crucial time of the match fixing scandal. With the support and partnership of Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly created a team which was alarming nationally but equally stirring abroad. He had been called by the referee many times because of his overconfident attitude but that did not make Ganguly silent. He expressed the need to be fearless by putting forward himself as an example. He believed that his attitude along with his performance was one of the reasons to move India forward on the cricket field. In 2003, under his leadership, India was able to enter the world Cup final. No other captain in India was as successful as Sourav Ganguly in the history of Indian cricket.
His dispute with Greg Chapelle in 2005, brought the both in many headlines. Ganguly is ranked by Wisden as the sixth greatest ODI batsman.

However, all the success and reputations could not put him to the CB series of Australia in 2008.
