Deshaun Watson raises a voice against biased decisions of team owners

The internal conflict in the Houston Texans is undeniable. Cal McNair’s disastrous interview further cemented the issues that were long floating as rumours. Son of late Bob Mc Nair and now CEO, Cal organized a press conference to make introductions for the newly hired general manager of the team, Nick Caserio.

He bluntly stated – Jack, Nick, 99, and 4. That is when the mess exploded. The way he listed Jack and Nick by names (the former has the position of the executive vice president of football operations while the latter is the General Manager) and the players as numbers say a lot. 99 represented JJ Watt; the best defense player on the team, and 4 is Deshaun Watson, the extremely talented quarterback.

To be fair on Cal, he did use words that were meant to instill confidence and assure everyone that they were a close-knitted team. In reality, the opposite happened. The divide has never been more clearer.

Amidst rising tensions, Deshaun Watson is ready to take a stand. He is willing to redefine the power structure in the teams across the entire NFL.

It’s probably worth noting that before hiring Caserio, Watson was made grand promises. He was assured that his input would be given priority and importance. Moreover, there was a decision that involved his presence during the head coach and GM interviews.

Watson stood by and let various shocking decisions pass. He overlooked the trade-off involving Jadveon Clowney. Furthermore, he was also a witness to the destruction that former GM and head cock, Bill O’Brien wrecked on the team. However, his patience finally ran out when Jack Esterby hired his friend and went back on his promises.

The uproar started when the Texans missed the golden opportunity to request an interview with Eric Bienemy. Watson wanted a formal interview with the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, Bienemy. When he made enough noise, the situation had already peaked, and the chance was gone. They couldn’t file any coach interview requests anymore.

It is not much of an overstretch when you look at the career graph of Bienemy. He had long been ignored in favor of others. In such crucial and sensitive times, overlooking the request of the star quarterback doesn’t bode well for the team. It was clear that Watson wanted to show support and empower another black talent. However, with the lack of cooperation of the owners and top-level executives, it was simply not possible.

The protest of the star quarterback is most likely to give rise to debates. While most may think that the players are not supposed to have any power when it comes to hiring, it is vital to remember that times are changing. In the backdrop of nation-wide protests and racial injustices, it is not possible to uphold the old norms anymore.

What Watson can really do is leverage the no-trade clause on his contract and make moves to arrange another deal. Shifting to another team that promotes team equality is a better alternative.
